Are you tired all the time, despite sleeping enough? Have you been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, PMS or hormone imbalance? If you have any of these chronic symptoms, if you think you may have food sensitivities, if you are currently taking hormone replacement therapy or if you are just interested in a new tool to promote good health, join Deanna Woodroffe, WHNP-BC for a “Detox with your doctor” program on Wednesday, May 30th at 6:30pm.

We will be discussing the why’s and how’s of liver detoxification and for those interested we will start a detox program together as a group. This seven day detox can improve the way you are feeling, improve mental clarity and help you to recognize what foods could be causing some of your symptoms.

Space is limited, so RSVP is necessary. You can contact Brandi at WHS at 314.292.7080 if you have further questions or if you would like to register.

Sincerely,

Deanna M. Woodroffe, RNC, WHNP

As a woman’s health nurse practitioner, one of the most common questions that I am asked is when young women should first visit a gynecologist.

While the answer to this question is not the same for everyone, there are some guidelines to follow.

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommends that girls first see an Ob/Gyn between the ages of 13 and 15. An earlier appointment should be made, however, if there has been any sexual activity.

This may seem like a young age to bring your daughter in for a Gyn visit, but these early visits are important for establishing a relationship with a health-care provider, and for your daughter to learn important information about her body. A Gyn visit can bring about anxiety in young girls. It is normal for them to feel embarrassed, nervous, or afraid. I have found that girls do much better with this visit if they are able to meet the provider and establish a relationship before the need to undress or have a pelvic exam.

Most girls will not need a pelvic exam or pap smear during this first visit, unless there are abnormal symptoms present. This is a good time for the patient to become familiar with the healthcare provider, and to begin to establish a trusting relationship in which she feels comfortable discussing personal concerns.

When I see an adolescent patient for an initial visit, I use this time to educate her and to help her feel comfortable. I discuss important ways to keep herself safe and healthy. I review appropriate hygiene, discuss her menstrual cycle and address any concerns that she may have. I also talk with her about sexuality, contraceptives and sexually transmitted infections.

So when should you bring your daughter in for the first time? Generally, my answer is the sooner the better. Make a preventative appointment. Don’t wait until something is wrong. Help her to understand the importance of preventative care, and start this process with a stress free, comfortable visit.

It is that time of year that many of us dread but we muster up the courage to schedule our well woman exam because we know how important it is to our health. So how can we make the most of it?

Be upfront when scheduling your appointment
If you have problems or concerns that may take more time, please express this to the front desk so they can schedule sufficient time for your concerns to be addressed. Anything you discuss with the front desk or the medical staff is strictly confidential.

Arrive Early
This allows plenty of time to update contact and health insurance forms.

Bring an updated insurance card and form of payment for your co-pay
Health insurance is evolving. It is very important to have your most recent insurance card to properly submit a claim on your behalf. We do expect your co-payment at the time of your appointment.

Bring a book or something for entertainment
We do our best to run on time but since delivering babies is involved there are times we just cannot avoid delays. Also, we strive to give each woman the time that she needs and will provide you the same courtesy when it is your visit.

Bring your medication and supplement bottles or a list
It is very important for your health care provider to know all the medications, herbs, or supplements that you may take as many can interact with medications or complicate health conditions.

Bring any medical records or test results obtained since your last visit
The well woman exam is an excellent opportunity to update any new medical conditions, procedures, or surgeries.

Wear a loose shirt or button up shirt
This allows for a more complete breast exam. If this is not possible, we offer a paper shirt for you to change into. Also, avoid wearing sports bras as they impede the breast exam.

Be honest about your habits
Open communication is crucial for you to maintain your best health. We are here to help you achieve optimal health in a non-judgmental environment.

Bring a list of questions/concerns
Many of us have good intentions of remembering just what to ask and update and then we get undressed… and forget! Writing it down before the appointment is very helpful.

Schedule a problem visit if there is a problem
It is best to have a well woman exam for proactive preventative health when there are not any immediate problems, changes, or concerns. Multiple problems and concerns are handled best at a focused visit.

Remember, your best health is the top priority of our team. We are an all female office with a similar philosophy and mutual respect for women and their healthcare. We work together as a team. We know your time is valuable and offer four female providers to serve you and accommodate your busy schedule.
