How to Make the Most of Your Well Woman Exam

It is that time of year that many of us dread but we muster up the courage to schedule our well woman exam because we know how important it is to our health. So how can we make the most of it?

  • Be upfront when scheduling your appointment
If you have problems or concerns that may take more time, please express this to the front desk so they can schedule sufficient time for your concerns to be addressed. Anything you discuss with the front desk or the medical staff is strictly confidential.
  • Arrive Early
This allows plenty of time to update contact and health insurance forms.
  • Bring an updated insurance card and form of payment for your co-pay
Health insurance is evolving. It is very important to have your most recent insurance card to properly submit a claim on your behalf. We do expect your co-payment at the time of your appointment.
  • Bring a book or something for entertainment
We do our best to run on time but since delivering babies is involved there are times we just cannot avoid delays. Also, we strive to give each woman the time that she needs and will provide you the same courtesy when it is your visit.
  • Bring your medication and supplement bottles or a list
It is very important for your health care provider to know all the medications, herbs, or supplements that you may take as many can interact with medications or complicate health conditions.
  • Bring any medical records or test results obtained since your last visit
The well woman exam is an excellent opportunity to update any new medical conditions, procedures, or surgeries.
  • Wear a loose shirt or button up shirt
This allows for a more complete breast exam. If this is not possible, we offer a paper shirt for you to change into. Also, avoid wearing sports bras as they impede the breast exam.
  • Be honest about your habits
Open communication is crucial for you to maintain your best health. We are here to help you achieve optimal health in a non-judgmental environment.
  • Bring a list of questions/concerns
Many of us have good intentions of remembering just what to ask and update and then we get undressed… and forget! Writing it down before the appointment is very helpful.
  • Schedule a problem visit if there is a problem
It is best to have a well woman exam for proactive preventative health when there are not any immediate problems, changes, or concerns. Multiple problems and concerns are handled best at a focused visit.
